Artist’s StatementMy work revolves around using furniture and product design as mediums to create drawings into three dimensional objects and into three dimensional spaces. I work primarily in the domestic space, drawing inspiration from what makes a home cozy and lively. Moving from Omaha to Minneapolis to receive a college education. Majoring in furniture was an impulsive decision I made and changed my perspective of drawing and shape. I explored a ton of techniques and never had a clear grasp of what I wanted to make in my earlier years. It wasn’t until we were introduced to digital fabrication that I learned how to transport my notebook drawings onto furniture. From there I started doodling patterns. Drawing symmetrical patterns is something that never fails to amuse me. There is something extremely satisfying from sitting down and drawing a simple shape then adding another, then adding another two hundred until a pattern has emerged. Once I would create a pattern I would have it transformed into a digital file and then upload it either onto a laser cutting machine or CNC machine where I can then watch as these machines carve out or burn my designs into wood. Something that would take me weeks to execute taking only a few hours.
I do take inspiration from Eurasian woodworking, tile making, and architecture. I love learning about the origins of mandalas in religious practice and the emergence of the arabesque and how it influenced other cultures like Japanese Kumiko and Venetian tiles.
Drawing patterns has always been something that I’ve done during class growing up. It was something simple that turned into something complex. The more shapes and layers added, similar to henna create this absolutely magnificent piece of art. There is a vast array of patterns that can be conjured up from simple shapes such as circles, squares, or triangles, and when adding together can create something more traditional and older feeling or more modern and contemporary feeling. This is what I explore in my work. Something that presents itself as cozy and traditional but sleek and a bit more modern. It is a balance that I work to get across both within singular products or an entire collection.
